The daughter of orthodox Sikh rebels against her parents’ traditionalism by running off to Germany with a football team

Comedy/drama, directed by Gurinder Chadha
Starring Parminder K Nagra, Keira Knightley

I was a little late on the bandwagon to watch this film, but having heard the rave reviews I sat and watched it on Sky last night. I did enjoy this film – but not as much as I expected to. I suppose it didn’t have the crossover appeal to adults that many teenage films do have. The fantastically funny acting by Juliet Stevenson as Jules’s Mum, outshone the rest of the cast. The ‘boy comes between friends’ story was a bit boring, and they should have taken the time to find a more interesting sub-plot. And I’m afraid to say, the boy just wasn’t good-looking enough!
I have little knowledge of Indian culture in England, but from where I stand the story involving the main character and the conflict involving her football interest and her family worked well. Overall it was a light-hearted, entertaining film – one for the girls’ sleepovers.
