When I Grow Up

Sky one Sunday evenings, repeated on Saturday.

Witchcraft at a posh boarding school.

I’ve just caught the first episode of this new drama series, which has apparently been compared to with Buffy the Vampire slayer. Well, I haven’t watched Buffy, so I can’t really comment on that, but I really liked it.
A girl at some sort of posh boarding school, Cassie, played by Christina Cole; discovers she has strange powers, is haunted by people who lived on the estate long ago and who need a sacrifice. Then, whilst having no friends amongst the trendy crowd, she has an argument with her best friend, Thelma (a lesbian), played by Jemima Rooper (recognised as Nicki from ‘As If.’) whom she’d been leading on. Thelma then turns up dead, in a lake after dreaming she was killed by some demon type guy.
I have to admit, I was surprised it was English. I’d be interested to know if the Americans are going to see of it, and what they think.
I’m definitely going to carry on watching this, but the first, feature length episode might have been a bit more engaging. There was a lot of setting the scene, and although there was brief confusion at what was going on with her mind, I would have thought Carrie would be a bit more surprised that she could set things alight and move things around just by looking at them. And from a story-telling point of view, they should have ended this episode with a bit more suspense – perhaps when Thelma went missing. They might have guaranteed a few more viewers in tomorrow’s episode.
I hope this takes off. I’m looking forward to seeing some good performances from Colin Salmon and the other teacher who I know off the telly, but can’t place right now (will edit when I find out- something like Cold Feet). I also love anything witchy. Halloween is well places to launch this series. I liked the portrayal of the school – in an old and mysterious setting, but with the students being cool and modern. I think it’s going to be good.
