When I Grow Up

Honey

A struggling dancer gets the career she’s dreamed of.
Honey, played by Jessica Alba, was almost far too pretty for this part! But not only was she pretty, she was actually a really good dancer and a nice do-gooder as well. It will almost definitely stir a little bit of jealousy and resentment even in the most pleasant of girls watching this film!
The plot was one big cliché – the Mum wants her to do ballet, not hip-hop; the boss wants to sleep with her; the friend gets left out; the poor little street kids lose their centre where they do dance lessons. Oh deary me.
However, there was something that stopped it being the even bigger cliché that was Save the Last Dance. (Why did you do it Julia Stiles, why?) No amount of cool moves stopped that from being an absolutely terrible film. Honey, though, did manage to retain a certain amount of cool. The plight of the neglected kids of New York wasn’t overdone so I didn’t roll my eyes at that; the actors could actually dance really well, so it was believable; Jessica Alba looked natural in her part and genuinely seemed to care for the little ones; and just the overall filming, the camera moves and direction (Billy Woodruff) seemed of better quality. Of course, the spattering of stars like Tweet, Ginuwine and Missy Elliott helped the film along its way, and Lil’ Romeo did his job of learning his lines and looking cute.
I actually liked this film, but it’s definitely a chick flick, and it would help if you have an interest in dancing.
