When I Grow Up

Afterlife

ITV Saturdays 9:05pm Written by Charlie Fletcher. Starring Lesley Sharp and Andrew Lincoln (Teachers)

This series is unfortunately disappointing. I watched the first episode four weeks ago and thought it looked good, but I missed the next couple of weeks, and watched it again on Saturday.

It is about a psychic woman who moved house for a new start and to try and escape the voices from the dead. Sadly for her, they don’t go away, and she comes accross Robert, a pschology teacher and writer, and the ghost of his dead son. Each week there’s a different story and different characters get involved.

I feel there is a certain mis-casting – sorry to say Lesley Sharp seems far too miserable as Alison. Granted, she would be miserable with screaming dead babies waking her up all the time; but even when she’s angry she seems to have the same expression. There needs to be something more likeable about the main character really, but perhaps it’s not clear whether it’s the fault of the actress or the director.

This is a series with a great idea, but I couldn’t help thinking, this is one rare case where the Americans would have done it better.

Radio Times mentioned last week’s episode that I missed, was terrifying, so I may give it another go, but I may not.
