This is actually a good film. I’m not going to rave about it because I don’t think it was amazing, but if you’re a fan of the book I don’t think you’re going to be disappointed. The casting was perfect. I admit I was very dubious when I heard it was Tom Hanks; in fact I thought that would ruin it, but he played the role very close to how I imagined Robert Langdon to be. The same can be said for Audrey Tautou as Sophie Neveu and Paul Bettany as Silas. (Incidentally it was nice seeing him naked again. I’m looking forward to listening to the commentary on the dvd to find out if someone had to tape his willy to his thigh like they had to for his naked scene in The Knight’s Tale!) The make-up crew must be commended for all the blood and gore in that bit – it looked so realistic!
Anyway, back to the actual film. It followed the book easily and swiftly and very few scenes needed to be adapted for film. What was missed out though, was all the lengthy conversations and explanations that took place in the book; understandably as that would just be boring to watch. But that does mean anyone hoping to watch the film instead of reading the book will miss out on a lot. The plot and the action came accross fine, but the impact of what Dan Brown says in the book about the religious conspiricies is lost. The film certainly doesn’t make you think, like the book does.
But overall it’s a very entertaining film and definitely one worth going to see!
