When I Grow Up

Mortgages

The hassle and the waiting; the waiting and the hassle. Oh to have a day where I don’t have to make 10 phonecalls chasing people up.

Right now, I can only advise you not to go for an Abbey mortgage through Countrywide mortage brokers. They received our signed forms and all the info they asked for on the 1st March. Three weeks later we’re told our accountant needs to fill in a form. Two weeks after that we’re told it was the wrong form. It’s ridiculous – our buyers who started the wole process 3 weeks after us, had their mortgage offer and mortgage survey done and dusted a week ago!

It seems that Abbey have the special honour of being more awkward than all the other mortgage companies Countrywide deal with. Eg, if you read the small print, you get a free valuation survey on another property if your buy falls through; unless the mortgage was with Abbey. Due to our broker getting sick, I phone countrywide head office (the number incidentally is only found when you search the website – not anywhere on the info pack they send you) to find out who will deal with us now and to express my dissatisfaction at the speed of this; but as soon as they find out it was Abbey, I’m given a different phone number. I phone that number and they say because it’s Abbey, they can’t give me any more information – the most they can do is leave a message for someone to call me back.

Apparently Abbey is extra busy at the moment because they’re the only people doing more mortgages due to the whole credit situation. I’m just telling you my latest experiences with them, and would recommend you look elsewhere for a mortgage. I am beyond fed up!
