When I Grow Up

Renovating Accidents

Can you tell which finger I hit with a hammer?

I’m sure there are many more to come, but this is what I have suffered so far.

Yesterday I trod on a nail. It went right through my slipper and into the ball of my foot. I was running late for school, it was dark in the corridor upstairs and I ran right onto it. Ouch. It didn’t half hurt. Weirdly, in the morning I walked on my foot fine, but it gradually got more and more painful throughout the day and I was limping badly by the evening. Today, although it hurts a bit, it has got a lot better.

It was entirely my own fault and all down to laziness. We’d pulled up the carpet when we had to get it out the way when we had the wall bashed through at the end of the corridor; and all the bits of hardboard, including nails, that were underneath were just left there to gather stone dust. Well not any more. After that incident, I spent today clearing away the debris. Underneath 3 layers of hardboard, the origninal wide elm boards lay underneath. I’m not sure how well they’ll take to the new traffic – I’m not going to be jumping on them that’s for sure. But now I can wave to the people downstairs in the living room through the gaps!

My previous injury happened last November when I was chipping away the plaster of the mysterious curved wall at the top of the stairs.  There was a small section of new gypsum plaster so it had to be whacked fairly hard with the hammer. However, I missed the chisel once and hit my finger. Ouch!! The pain beat the nail in the foot that’s for sure. As you can see in the photo, my finger went black and swelled to double its normal size. I couldn’t touch it or move it for days. In fact it was about 3 months before it felt right again. Chris thought I should go to A&E, but I looked online at Yahoo Answers and it appears that plenty of people have experienced the same thing!
