When I Grow Up

Rayburn diary – Day 3

We’re learning – we’re gradually getting the hang of it.

Overnight banking was fairly successful again and although radiators felt cold on Sunday morning, the house generally felt warm and once again no matches were needed to get it going again. The radiators warmed up pretty quickly. Sunday was a pretty warm day anyway, so the house was actually on the hot side of warm! The kitchen may have even been verging on being able to describe it as hot! While I was gardening, I left the door open.

Although the central heating wasn’t a problem; cooking was. After 15 minutes I gave up on toast in the morning, and finished off in the toaster. Then in the evening, I put in jacket potatoes and they didn’t cook nearly as quickly as they had done on Saturday. In fact I couldn’t get the oven temperature past B for Bake. After an hour I decided to re-read the instruction booklet and found that we should have had the cooker/boiler damper on ‘C’ not ‘H’. So I flicked it over and fiddled with the flue chamber damper – one part of the booklet tells you to close it, and another part tells you to have it half way. Spin wheel advice varied as well – I had it open to begin with, but then almost closed it. Whatever I did; I did it right because the oven temperature rose and within 10 minutes it was on the o of ‘Roast’. Soon after the potatoes were done and once again tasted divine!

Also, my daughter had her first bath in almost two years! She was so pleased as she hates showers! She was so excited; it was cute to see, and she said afterwards how relaxed she felt. Looking forward to my first bath now.
