1. Kick some leaves. Next time you’re on your way to work, walking the kids to school, or generally going about your day, and you spy a pile of leaves at the side of the pavement; kick it! Go on! Even if there are people about to see; scatter those leaves in the air! (Just make sure there are no small children nearby you might accidentally kick in the face. And make sure the foot not in the air has secure purchase on the ground – not on a wet slippery leaf. See? I struggle with letting go.)…..

2. It’s time to buy / make / dig out your blankets from the back of the airing cupboard. October is suddenly freezing and I’m cosying up with a blanket most evenings as it’s far too soon to be lighting the Rayburn (we put off the hassle of that for as long as we can). I made these blankets on my settee in the picture above using upholstery samples to patchwork together and backed them onto scratchy blankets my Nan once knitted. (You Tube video about it here.)

3. Go blackberry picking. I wrote about this in a recent post, so I won’t repeat myself, but it’s so good for switching off and getting at one with nature. Then of

course you can enjoy eating the fruit of your labours! Do this soon as they won’t be around for much longer.
4. Be outside for sunset. These crisp, cold autumn sunny days usually bring a beautiful sunset. Try and be outside for one of them and just stand still and enjoy it. Around 6:20pm seems to be the best time at the moment.
5. Plant spring bulbs. This is always something I forget to do / can’t be bothered to do, and regret it in April. Patience is a virtue I’m can’t acclaim to having, but when those tulips brighten up the first warm days of next year, we’ll be glad we put the effort in now.
