When I Grow Up

How to wear your summer dresses in autumn!

styling summer dresses for autumn

I’d seen this H&M yellow poppy dress in the shop, but they didn’t have my size, and it turned out they were sold out online. So I did my usual thing and took to ebay, where I found it unwanted but new with tags – perfect! But in the end I didn’t wear it much over summer after all…

The lining of the dress is viscose, but the chiffon (as chiffon almost always is) is polyester, and with the lining being very clingy, I didn’t feel particularly comfortable wearing the dress in the warm weather. So anyway, I thought it would be a lovely dress for spring and autumn, and if it gets a bit chilly, just throw a jumper over the top.

I like the mix of wearing a casual oversized knitted jumper (that’s starting to look a bit tatty now) (when I grow up I will remember to de-bobble my knitwear) with a smart, pretty feminine dress. And if you have any dresses you’d like to keep wearing as the days turn colder, this is an easy way to do it. I sometimes think people are far too quick to pack their summer clothes under the bed for winter, but the British summer is so short, I’m always looking for ways to wear them as long as possible. I made a YouTube video last year with more suggestions to transition your wardrobe, if you’d like to have a look! And although this H&M chiffon dress came with a jersey slip to wear underneath, you could also buy a thermal version to keep you even warmer. By the way, I’m sorry, I’m away in America as I write this and can’t check the label on the jumper, but it’s a couple of years old now, and bought here from Macy’s Backstage discount shop.

I love this boho style maxi dress – it’s so pretty! In fact, I have more photos of it to show you another time, because we hadn’t actually planned on doing a photo-shoot on this day. I’d worn it for the photo-shoot for a fashion blog post the day before, but when I wore it again with the jumper, and we were in the lovely location of Saltram, a National Trust property in Devon, we thought we may as well take more! I really like the combination of blue and yellow – it reminds me of the sun in the sky on a clear day; and although most bloggers say their favourite season is autumn, I’m quite happy to try and keep the feeling of summer going for as long as I possibly can!
