When I Grow Up

How to dress more creatively (part 2) Autumn – winter boho style

autumn boho style

We tend to think of bohemian fashion as something for summer – all billowing white floaty dresses on the beach, or crochet vest tops and denim shorts at a music festival. However, I found a way to take the bohemian look into autumn…

By the way, welcome to my series about how to dress more creatively! People bored with the contents of their wardrobe have asked for my help, so here’s my guide to moving away from the jeans and Breton striped tops you might automatically reach for!

Tiered dresses

Although the shops right now are pushing forward their rails of Christmas party-wear; long tiered dresses are still about, and my prediction is there are going to be more than ever next year. I love picking colours that are synonymous with the season. For example, for autumn you could choose shades of mustard yellow, burnt orange, russet red or mahogany brown. I picked up this orangey-brown dress in Target when I was in America a couple of weeks ago, and although we edged into winter while I wasn’t looking, I’m squeezing as much wear out of it as I can while it looks perfect for autumn!

That’s not to say that I won’t wear the dress in other seasons as well, but other items in my wardrobe may start to get more popular! (I have a similar dress in black with florals to show you soon.)

Texture

Natural rustic materials work perfectly for a bohemian look, so I like the chunky knit of this Free People cropped jumper and the dusky mustard colour goes so well with the brown maxi dress. For my height and shape, the shorter jumper also does me the favour of not dragging me down like a long cardigan would do. Not to mention the fact that it’s incredibly soft and keeps me warm!

Bohemian footware

I wore the boho-style dress with bare legs, but as the weather gets colder you can wear tights or leggings underneath, and in early autumn when you get those odd warm days still, it would look lovely with brown leather sandals. As far as I am concerned, the chunkier the boots the better! And I love the juxtaposition between the girly flowy boho dresses and hardwearing boots. These are my Clarks ankle boots, but really I’m after some with a more rugged sole (let me know if you can recommend any!)
