When I Grow Up

Another mystery plant

Alien plant

and how I’m trying to get rid of it!

Alien plant in flower

Much of the middle bed was full of a flower I just didn’t want in my garden. It’s so ugly! The flower isn’t so bad – even though it’s yellow – but the stem is thick and grey and has rubbery spikes instead of leaves. It grows up all hunched over throughout May and then in June it straightens up and flowers.

I dug it all up when I got the chance in July. About 60 of them all together; I got the kids to help when they got bored. Then I advertised them on Freecycle and surprisingly I got 4 responses. I divided them up and gave them away, but 1 person didn’t come and collect. However, someone else told me about the nearby Glastonbury Gardeners’ Group and that they do plant swaps. I’ve joined the group and will take the rest of the spiky rubbery plants along to the next one

By the way, it’s definitely not in the RHS Good Plant Guide and I haven’t seen it in any of the gardening articles I’ve torn out of magazines. I think it’s an alien mutant plant.
