When I Grow Up

Snowdrops

snowdrops?

Last autumn I planted 150 of them! I love snowdrops!

They are so pretty, and really cheer you up in the depths of the miserable winter weather.  I planted a tonne of bulbs and couldn’t wait till they came up this spring. And just take a look at the photo to see the amazing swathes of nodding snowdrops in my meadow garden.

I’m being sarcastic of course. I counted 13 out of a hundred. The other 50 went elsewhere in the garden and another 9 popped up there. I knew planting snowdrops from bulbs was not the best way, but I thought that I’d have a better success rate than that! My husband tried cheering me up by saying he was sure that more come up next year and they’d keep on getting better, but my experience at the old house proved otherwise. I started with 20 and ended with 1, 3 years later!

I decided that even if they did get better, you can never have too many snowdrops. So I looked up on ebay and found I could buy 100  ‘in the green’ ie just flowered for £13. I think the bulbs cost me more than that! I read in a magazine that this is a more successful way of planting them, so I’ll let you know this time next year.
