When I Grow Up

Birthday dinner at The Kingsdon Inn, nr Somerton, Somerset

Kingsdon Arms

It was my birthday! And what better way to celebrate than going out and have someone else cook for you. And clear away. Yeeees! I absolutely love eating out. It’s just such a pity that one meal out for the four of us costs about the same as our weekly shop from Tescos. But you see, (as I sometimes remember to remind myself) if you did it every day, it wouldn’t be special, would it? My lovely daughter, Rain did the research, and hunted out all restaurants within a reasonable distance that served Duck, being that duck is my favourite meal. The Kingsdon Inn came up as one of the top twenty restaurants in Somerset, and when my husband phoned to check food serving hours, it turned out you need to book well in advance if you want a table. We were lucky and got the second-to-last one; which is not what you’d expect for somewhere truly out in the sticks….

I can’t give you an accurate description of the decor, as we went in and then were immediately taken to our table in the extension, but I gather the old bit is lovely and characterful. Our area was still pleasant enough, but so uncomfortable. The ladder-back chairs gave me back-ache and were that bit too tall for the table; and the table had a really low frame support which meant my thighs were pressed against the edge of the wood the whole time. It’s a real shame, because the Kingsdon Inn is clearly a cut above your average pub restaurant. I could tell that immediately by the way they brought vegetable crisps to the table to snack on while we waited for the food.

The food, I have to say was utterly delicious. I have nothing but praise for the chef and the quality of the meat, vegetables and presentation. However, it was not enough food to fill me up. Half a carrot does not an accompaniment make in my opinion. There was maybe one potato crushed under the meat. Well, you can see from the photo how much I had. It’s

another sign that it’s a bit posher than what I’m used to! I finished every morsel and was still hungry, so also ate the salad that my husband didn’t want from his plate, and a few chips. After that, I was ok, so I suppose if we’d had starter and pudding as well, I’m sure the meal would have been very satisfying.

Chris had beef burger and chips; Rain had rose veal and Jude had scampi. The scampi was definitely your best bet if you’re hungry. With an extra side of skinny fries and 2 pints of Orchard Pig cider (probably my favourite cider, and not just because it’s made down the road), it came to

£65.30.  Well, you can see the menu yourself on their website. I do appreciate it when a restaurant can actually be bothered to put their menu online – it’s makes it so much easier! Everyone was very happy with their food, although I wasn’t the only one disappointed with the portion size. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Rain manage a whole meal before.

The service was excellent and I would definitely return

there again for a special occasion. Next time we’ll be sure to get a starter and another side order too!
