When I Grow Up

My strange relationship with fashion

Back in Somerset

You may have noticed that my blog has been gradually overhauled and updated in the last few months (and still is – new logo coming soon!), and yet I haven’t gone with the same fashionable layout as most top bloggers at the moment – you know the kind – the picture that doesn’t scroll with your mouse, and the blocks of pictures. There is no doubt that this style looks beautiful, but I personally find it confusing. I like a blog that has clear categories that are easy to find, as well as a way of reading everything in order with the most recent post first. I hope I’m doing the right thing (I have already been complimented on the clear layout), but I’ve decided to keep my blog unfashionable, but in a way that suits me. My fashion sense with clothes works in a similar way……

For example, I know I have broad shoulders and large upper arms, so you aren’t for the life of me going to get me in an off-the-shoulder bardot top or one with the cut-out bits over the upper arms because I know I’m not going to look good in it no matter how much it’s fashionable. Don’t get me wrong though – at the same time as completely disregarding it; I do actually love fashion! It’s strange, because I love reading articles about the next season’s trends and scrolling through pictures from the latest catwalk shows. I also often feel more confident than usual if I’m walking down the road wearing something I know to be at the height of fashion. However, if there’s one thing I hate; it’s wearing the same thing as everyone else!

There is nothing more annoying that having my own ‘thing’, only for it to become fashionable and then find everyone else is wearing it! For example I used to wear shawls every winter, and then last year, when I saw my niece and her friend wearing one, I decided it was time to stop! I know it doesn’t make sense – there’s no need to tell me! I just didn’t want people to think I was only wearing a shawl because it was the fashion. And now I worry that’s now ‘so last year’ that if I wear one people will think I’m not up-to-date and that I don’t realise they’re really unfashionable now!

So I like to think I don’t care what other people think about what I wear, but as you can see, I obviously do! And I have this weird thing going on where I love looking at fashion magazines and blogs and seeing what trends are coming up, but at the same time, I don’t want to buy something just because it’s fashionable! I’ll usually pick out the trends I do actually like, and wear those items I already have in my wardrobe that correspond. You know what a hoarder I am – I probably have it from when it was last in fashion!
