The Illustrated Mum

From the novel by Jacqueline Wilson. Starring Michelle Collins, Alice Connor and Holly Grainger.I’ve found out this was shown last year on telly, but I only just watched it from when it was shown on ITV(?) a few days ago. This was a really long film – 2 hours I think, and my daughters did get bored towards the end. I have to say, I’m not sure if the film would encourage me to buy the book – it was just so dismal. Nothing good happened to the characters and the film didn’t make it clear what happened to the elder sister – I assumed she joined Dolphin, but it wasn’t said.
If you haven’t read the book by Jacqueline Wilson, or seen the film, then it’s all about a Mum who is slightly crazy and can’t really look after her children (called Dolphin and Star) properly. They each have a different Dad and their Mum, Marigold is a bit obsessed by one of them. I imagine the book actually would tell the story a lot better as you’d probably get the details like what actually happened between Star and that boy; how Dolphin managed to deal with the bullies at school and why exactly was the number 7 so important?
It would probably be good for kids to see that coping with life, reality and a family, isn’t always easy for adults, and it did well at showing it from that point of view. My youngest daughter clung to my arm throughout most of it, so I’m glad she understood that I’m relatively sane!

Review of the mitre restaurant in Oxford
A quick review of The Mitre restaurant in Oxford
April 19, 2017
My trip to Oxford was a year ago now, but I found this review in my notebook, so I thought I’d type it up as it could be useful to someone visiting Oxford. Just to fill you in, as part of my Christmas and birthday presents, I had a little two-night stay in a lovely hotel near the city, all by myself. It was heaven! Anyway, you can never go wrong with a Beefeater restaurant, so I tried the one on Oxford High Street called The Mitre….
Review of the L’Oreal Voluminous Superstar Mascara
February 15, 2017
On holiday in America in 2015 I bought the L’Oreal Beauty Tubes mascara. This was amazing, but when I went back last year, I couldn’t find it again. Instead, L’Oreal had this mascara, called Voluminous Superstar. It is one of those mascaras with two ends – a white coat first to lengthen your lashes and then the actual mascara to go over the top. This was just what I was looking for as I’ve liked those kind ever since I bought the Maybelline XXL volume mascara. (See my review here from 2005)……
living with hypothyroid disease
Living with hypothyroidism – blame, balance, and being kind to yourself
May 24, 2018
This week is Thyroid awareness week and the 25th of May is World Thyroid Day. It feels like every day of the week and every week of the year is National or International awareness day for something or other. Well, this is mine. I hope we don’t get too weary of these sorts of days and weeks that we become indifferent about them. Anyway, I wrote more about my Hypothyroid disease story on a post a few years ago if you’d like a read of that first; and please scroll down to watch the video I made about it as well…
Adagio teas
Tea for people who don’t like tea! (And for those who do.)
October 3, 2018
When Adagio Teas asked if I’d like to work with them, I had to be honest in my reply; that I don’t actually like tea. On my trips to America, this is like saying I’m not actually British, but my main disgruntle is that I couldn’t join in with all the beautiful Instagrams of cups of tea! I do, however like fruit infusions, and the mango flavoured tea I had at the Jane Austen Centre a couple of weeks ago was very nice, so I asked if I could try their flavoured tea….
