Tribal: The wild side of clothing

swimsuitThis article was originally published on Try Handmade. I am reliably informed by several fashion magazines, that ‘tribal’ is fashionable for this summer, though I’m not sure sure exactly what this means – especially as this has been a trend for the last few years, varying slightly each time…

My mind is drawn towards a native American style – lots of tan leather and suede and fringes and tassels and beads. I also think of a not-very-good-but-popular BBC television programme my daughters used to love called Cave Girl. Although the plot lines were rather iffy, the costumes were cool. If my memory serves me correctly, Cavegirl ran around rocks and desert fighting rival tribes with wild untamed hair and wearing wrapped around pieces of hide and fur. To be honest, it was rather too sexy for a children’s programme (the boys were topless though, so it was ok!), but then tribal is a sexy look. There always seems to be plenty of skin on show; remember Destiny’s Child Survivor music video?

I found the above swimsuit on Etsy, by seller ElvenForest and I love it! You would definitely be the coolest person on the beach wearing that.

This creation by CrudeThings looks fab on the mannequin with all those tribalbellydance accessories. In hot summer reds and yellows it is perfect for bellydancing the night away.

African inspired prints are around a lot this year too. I’m always a bit wary of wearing prints – they don’t suit my pale skin and not-so-skinny figure. However, I would give dresses like this one printdressby VC2o a try. It is absolutely perfect for exploring exotic countries on your holidays, and I really like the hanky hem-line and muted colours.

It’s a great summer music festival look as well. It can be as costumey and dressed up as you like. I’d definitely wear this outfit by ConciousLivingThreads. A perfect tribal look and I outfitalways love an interesting back to a top.

Late January Sales shopping – Next, New Look, Joe Browns, Joules & Weird Fish
February 6, 2017
I don’t like crowds; particularly in the shops when the January sales start. However, I absolutely LOVE a bargain! So, if I have the funds, I would sometimes go shopping the first week the kids had gone back to school, so at least I wouldn’t be fighting with them along the sales rails! Lately though, I haven’t specifically gone out of my way to go shopping in the sales, but I passed by New Look the other day and bought a couple of things. Then I was seduced by the Joe Browns catalogue that appeared on my doorstep, so I bought a couple of things from there online. Then, I was at Clark’s Village in Street to look for boots for Chris, when I ended up buying a few things there. Ooops!….
Game of Thrones costume ideas
October 7, 2016
Winter is coming and that means halloween is creeping up on us, so I thought I’d start you off with ideas for costumes from the famous HBO series, Game of Thrones. I’ll be honest, I didn’t get into it straight away – I think we gave up on it after a few episodes because I thought it was too violent and gratuitous and already characters I liked got killed. Then I knew I was going to meet Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) as she was going to judge the competition where we made items of clothing from old books. So I had to watch it, just in case it came up in conversation! So we ploughed through, and it wasn’t until the third series when I actually started enjoying it. Then I really got into it! Here are some ideas from Etsy….

The red Christmas party dress
December 23, 2017
Red is the colour of choice for this season anyway, so what better time of year than Christmas to embrace the fashion? I bought this red dress from the Jameela Jamil collection at Simply Be back in spring, but sadly the event I bought it for was cancelled, and I’ve been waiting for the opportune time to fetch it out of my wardrobe! Christmas is practically upon us, and I think this red dress could not be more perfect for the celebrations! Pillar-box red is a colour that suits everyone, so don’t be a wallflower in black this holiday – get out the dress you know you’ve been wanting to wear!….
