Elephant seals at California

It’s always fascinating seeing animals you normally only ever see in zoos, actually in the wild. So we went looking for elephant seals on the Californian coast…

Once again I followed the advice of The Rough Guide to beachCalifornia, and once again I shouldn’t have. We were travelling south to north, and I’ve been through the book over and over trying to find the names of the places, but can’t. I’m sure one of them was Cambria though. Both were pleasant places to stop if you have the time, but there were no signs of seals. Keep going until there is a signpost saying Elephant Seal Rookery. There’s a large car park and viewing area and the elephant seals are everywhere! Unfortunately it was dusk when we arrived, so myseals2 photos aren’t great, but at least we did finally see them. It’s definitely worth a stop on your journey.

The little picnic area below the look-out point had people playing frisbee and surprisingly, British football. Couples and groups took in turns to take their photos by the wall where the landscape fell sharply down to a wide vista of New Haven….
