Elephant seals at California

It’s always fascinating seeing animals you normally only ever see in zoos, actually in the wild. So we went looking for elephant seals on the Californian coast…

Once again I followed the advice of The Rough Guide to beachCalifornia, and once again I shouldn’t have. We were travelling south to north, and I’ve been through the book over and over trying to find the names of the places, but can’t. I’m sure one of them was Cambria though. Both were pleasant places to stop if you have the time, but there were no signs of seals. Keep going until there is a signpost saying Elephant Seal Rookery. There’s a large car park and viewing area and the elephant seals are everywhere! Unfortunately it was dusk when we arrived, so myseals2 photos aren’t great, but at least we did finally see them. It’s definitely worth a stop on your journey.

Visiting the Jack o’lantern Blaze & wearing my new purple coat
October 30, 2018
We couldn’t be in America without visiting a Halloween event, could we? Friends recommended the Jack o’lantern Blaze at Croton-on-Hudson in New York, and we were lucky enough to get tickets. This event sells out weeks beforehand, but I think I happened to be online when a new batch was released for an 8:30pm time slot on Tuesday. So I bought the tickets in a bit of a panic, but didn’t really know what it was I was buying them for!…
how to road trip with kids
7 ways to survive a family road trip – holidays with kids advice!
June 5, 2018
Are you going on a road trip with your kids? Does the thought of going on holiday with children fill you slightly with dread? Well, worry no more – I’m here to help you out! Our first family road trip was back in 2002 when our daughters were seven and four years old and we did the classic California route that’s become very popular recently: Los Angeles then travel along the coast to San Francisco; to Yosemite national park; through Death Valley to Las Vegas; to the Grand Canyon; to San Diego for Seaworld then back to LA for Disney Land. And that was pre Sat Nav – I can still hardly believe we did all that with paper maps! Anyway, since then we’ve done a variation of that loop three more times and several camper van holidays in the UK from long weekends to a three-week tour of iron-age sites. Last year we drove from Washington DC to Orlando via Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans. I feel that we’ve got pretty good at road-tripping by now……
3 Days in Oxford – Day 2. The story of the photographs
October 12, 2016
If you haven’t yet seen Day 1, then you might like to follow this link and come back here later. The morning of my second day in Oxford was mainly spent walking from the Four Pillars Hotel in Sandford-on-Thames along the Thames path into Oxford. I’ve already written a detailed blog with photos about the journey in this post, so I’ll begin here where I left off, entering the city by Christchurch College. I sort-of meandered my way through cobbled streets and past various ancient University buildings until I came out at a place I remembered….
