I don’t know how often these exhibitions change, but at the moment there is a selection of really, really, really old romantic books.
I couldn’t believe how old some of these book were! It was worth going in just to see how old they were! Books included an original Shakespeare, Chaucer and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from c.1400. The illustrations and calligraphy – much in gold leaf – were stunning. As well as this collection of ancient huge thick books, you could also see an original script, covered in director’s notes from Monty Python’s Holy Grail. (It was fairly high up in the cabinet, but be warned if you’re visiting with kids – it’s the bit about the oral sex!)
It is only one room, but it is another free attraction in Oxford, and well worth popping in to have a look.
