I Capture The Castle

I tore out a review from some magazine ages and ages ago for I Capture The Castle to remind me to get it to watch, but I never got round to renting the dvd, so I was very pleased to see it on telly a few days ago. It was rated a PG; it sounded like a nice fairytale type story and the book was written by the author of 101 Dalmations, so I watched it with my kids who are 6 and 9. It wasn’t really a kids film at all though. Eg: “Mummy, why did she take her clothes off and run around in the rain?” And frankly, they were a bit bored by it really. But I certainly enjoyed it.
It is about two daughters of a struggling author renting a beautiful castle to live in, but have no money. Set in the 1930s, they of course aim to marry rich guys. However they’ve been cut off from the real world and their experience of men is limited, until 2 Americans come along.
It’s a bit of a coming-of-age story really, with innocent discussions about kissing and falling in love. All very nice, but didn’t leave me feeling particularly moved at all.
