Roxy’s Baby

I wish I’d read this sooner (espcially as it’s the book recommended by Amazon when you buy mine!)It is Roxy’s Baby by Catherine Macphail (a fellow nominee for the Lancashire Book Award 2006)

This is not the book you may expect from the title. It is certianly not a run-of-the-mill story about teenage pregnancy, as you’ll guess from the blurb: “Roxy was shaking with fear. She drew in a deep breath. She would not let her fear take over. She couldn’t. She had too much to lose. She had to be strong, to be brave. For once in her life she had to think of someone other than herself.”

I couldn’t put this book down and read it from start to finish during my train journey the other day when I was meant to be doing the writing I had brought with me! More of a thriller your usual teen book, and I was amazed to find out at the end that the idea came from a true news story. However, along with the pacey plot, there was the right amount of vivid description and emotions in the writing, so I really felt part of it.

A highly recommended read!

Birthday dinner at The Kingsdon Inn, nr Somerton, Somerset
May 9, 2016
It was my birthday! And what better way to celebrate than going out and have someone else cook for you. And clear away. Yeeees! I absolutely love eating out. It’s just such a pity that one meal out for the four of us costs about the same as our weekly shop from Tescos. But you see, (as I sometimes remember to remind myself) if you did it every day, it wouldn’t be special, would it? My lovely daughter, Rain did the research, and hunted out all restaurants within a reasonable distance that served Duck, being that duck is my favourite meal. The Kingsdon Inn came up as one of the top twenty restaurants in Somerset, and when my husband phoned to check food serving hours, it turned out you need to book well in advance if you want a table. We were lucky and got the second-to-last one; which is not what you’d expect for somewhere truly out in the sticks….
making a new patio area
Making a social outdoor dining area
September 16, 2018
We have been dragging our heels for ages over buying a new set of outdoor furniture. Our old wooden table and chairs are well and truly rotting away. We have also had it in our minds to build a verandah at the back of the house, leaning against the kitchen wall. However, each spring has come along and we’ve ended up spending any spare money we’ve had on a holiday instead. So it hasn’t happened, but the idea was still there, and it made a choice on the garden furniture difficult to make…..
Exposing a fireplace and other renovating adventures
January 6, 2017
Some of you have been following the renovating side of this blog since we moved in eight and a half years ago; so I thought I’d do a quick update of a couple of the smaller jobs that we’ve done recently. The first clue that there was an old fireplace in our bedroom was the hearthstone that we found when lifting up the beige carpet to reveal the Georgian floorboards. The second clue was the obvious difference in sound when knocking on the wall. The third clue was the whacking great hole behind the plaster when we hit it with a hammer….
Making a pineapple and walnut cake – a picture guide for beginners
May 26, 2016
These pictures were taken when I made my favourite cake to celebrate twelve years of this blog. The recipe is nothing particularly special or exciting, and now that the Great British Bake-off is such a hit, this is probably incredibly tame, but I thought I’d share it anyway. (At least I’m assuming that’s likely the case – I’ve never actually watched the show apart from one Children-in-need episode.) There’s a possibility you’ve never put pineapple or walnut together in a cake before, and now is your chance to be inspired! …
