Behind the Scenes at Hollow Crown filming

On Monday I luckily heard through Facebook that Benedict Cumberbatch, along with other amazing actors such as Michael Gambon and Judi Dench were filming the next series of The Hollow Crown nearby! By chance, my daughter had an orthodontist appointment after school there, so of course we stopped by to have a good old nose.

There’s nothing more exciting than being on a film set! We got to see Benedict Cumberbatch be crowned as Richard 3rd and all the tricks they do with smoke and lighting. The most exciting for me was seeing all the wonderful medieval costumes. I wanted to stare and stroke, but that would probably have creeped out the actors somewhat and result in me being removed.

I wasn’t allowed to take photos inside, but I took a few on the set outside – unfortunately I recently acquired a hand-me-down phone and I hadn’t got used to the camera settings so most of them are awfully blurred. Such a pity. I’ll try and go back later this week to see if they’re still there!

A guide for how to survive Orlando theme parks – Disney World & Universal Studios
August 6, 2016
I’ll be honest, six years ago I’d never even contemplated an Orlando holiday – it just wasn’t something that interested me. We’d done a couple of trips to Disney Land and Universal Studios in California, and that was enough for me. But then they went and built Harry Potter World! That pretty much changed everything, and suddenly we were booking ourselves two weeks in Florida. Four years later we went again with Chris’s family; and last week we ended up there again for the last four days of our road-trip holiday. There’s something so magical and wonderful about those theme parks that is difficult to describe to someone who’s never been. I don’t know what preconceptions I’d had before; whether I was being a bit snobby about it; but I had not expected it to love it there as much as I do! If you’ve never been before and are going this summer, or planning next year’s holiday, then I hope you’ll find this little guide to Orlando useful. Even if you’re not, I hope you find it interesting! ….
Kilver Court Christmas, Shepton Mallet, Somerset
December 3, 2016
There is one thing that I have really missed since moving from Tonbridge (apart from family of course) and that’s a decent place to visit that sells nice Christmas decorations! We used to go to all the nearby garden centres and they’d have masses of Christmas delights to tempt me, but here in the centre of Somerset, there really isn’t a lot to choose from apart from B&Q and B&Ms. So when I saw that Kilver Court were doing a Christmas evening last Thursday, along with mulled wine, mince pies and carol singing, I had to go! ….
Butlins, Minehead
March 16, 2016
I’ve just been looking through my saved drafts of blog posts, and came across this one that I wrote four years ago! I think it’s worth publishing because the tips will still be useful, but the prices will be out of date now. My friend Traci and I took our village Youth Club kids to Butlins in Minehead, Somerset for the day… Well, first I have to say I was pretty impressed with the place. There was a friendly atmosphere and it was spotlessly clean. It was also well laid out and difficult to get lost in, which is useful when you’ve got 10 kids to keep an eye on….
3 days in New York
3rd and final day in New York + Review of The Wyndham New Yorker Hotel
May 22, 2017
Our third day was only just over half a day really as we had a train to catch late afternoon to take us to Washington DC. So as this is a shorter post, I thought I’d include a quick review of the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel and my overall opinion in visiting New York. There were no bus tours this day, but we took an Uber to see the Grand Central Station, and it really is not one to miss on your places to visit list! We ate breakfast in form of cookies in a cafe there called Zaro’s, and they were the most delicious cookie and chocolate chunk scone I’ve ever tasted in my life. Then we spent a while taking photographs….
