A quick review of The Mitre restaurant in Oxford

Review of the mitre restaurant in Oxford

My trip to Oxford was a year ago now, but I found this review in my notebook, so I thought I’d type it up as it could be useful to someone visiting Oxford. Just to fill you in, as part of my Christmas and birthday presents, I had a little two-night stay in a lovely hotel near the city, all by myself. It was heaven! Anyway, you can never go wrong with a Beefeater restaurant, so I tried the one on Oxford High Street called The Mitre….

I’d had a big breakfast and walked the three miles into town, so after I’d done a little sight-seeing it was early afternoon when I sat down to eat and the restaurant was pleasantly quiet. I had a table with a view of the street and it was nice to people-watch as everyone went about their day outside. The service was friendly and fast and my food came really quickly too.

Starter at The Mitre

I was pretty hungry so I decided to treat myself to a starter. I almost never have a starter! (If it’s a choice between the two; pudding usually wins!) I had sticky duck wings and four came on the plate with plenty of meat on them and were very tasty.

Main course at The Mitre, Oxford

For my main course I chose the mushroom risotto and paid just a pound extra to have a very decent sized portion of chicken on the top. (Tip – if you’re there when the lunch and dinner menu times overlap, this is cheaper on the daytime saver menu!)

The decor of The Mitre is fine; perhaps a little old-fashioned, but so are most things in Oxford and that’s just the way I like it! I’d much rather traditional like that than they tried to make it all modern. All in all, I had a lovely meal; very good quality; presented prettily and excellent value. If you’re visiting the city and wondering where to eat in Oxford, then I’d definitely recommend you stop here.
