A lovely Iron Age village in West Cornwall.
This is a great place to visit whether or not you’re interested in the British Iron Age period; and best of all it’s absolutely free! There is a donation box from English Heritage for upkeep of the site and car park, but I suppose they don’t have anyone working there all the time because it’s tucked away down a tiny country lane.
You can see the remains here of the stone walls of the ancient roundhouses in a small community, and an amazing fogou; underground chamber, that’s easy to get right inside of. It’s in a beautiful setting with views over the countryside, and much less people than at nearby Chysauster. We only saw one other family while we were there.
There are several information boards which help you work out which wall is part of which building and which lump is a grave etc. There are no toilets at the car park, but it’s only a five minute easy walk from there to the actual site. (If you have a pushchair, there is one style – but nothing 2 adults wouldn’t manage). It was August when we visited, but I gather the main path can get muddy and so can the fogou if you visit in winter.
