Rainbow Colour Set

The new childrens’ painting craze

I dithered and dithered over this Christmas present. A relative of mine has a habit of buying loads of cheap imitation presents like pretend Barbie stuff and they always fall apart in a couple of days and I just wish that instead she’d just buy one, more expensive thing instead. Well, there’s this rainbow art set that you may have seen on telly. If not, I’m sure you would’ve seen it at a display in your nearest shopping centre – I’ve seen it at the Victoria Centre in Tunbridge Wells, in Bluewater and also at Harrods. The watercolour paints are set out in semi-circular blocks and instead of brushes there’s a set of rectangular sponges on sticks in different sizes. It can result in some rather cool effects – especially with several colours on the sponge at once.
My daughters had seen them and really wanted one, but it costs £20. So that would be £40 as I’d have to buy one for each of them – and that’s a lot of money for what is basically a set of paints and sponges. So I had a look on e-bay, and they also had them at the Saturday market. Not the real thing though; a cheap imitation. It even says on the box, ‘Similar to as seen on TV’ !! But they go for half the price.
So I bought them a box each for Christmas from e-bay. And then I worried that they’d open them and the brushes would fall apart or the paint would just run and never dry and be useless. But no – they’ve been absolutely fine. Since Christmas day the kids have had them out twice and provided an hours worth of entertainment each time, with no problems at all. So in this case, I would actually recommend buying the rip-off version of something!

Have you heard of the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon? Or perhaps you’ve heard it called ‘Frequency bias’? Have you ever looked around for your new car; chosen a make and model you’re interested in, and then all of a sudden you see it everywhere? It’s the car in front of you in the traffic jam, and then you walk past two more as you walk across the car park to the Tescos entrance. It seems like the universe knows you want that car, and decides to show it to you ALL the time…
