(Somehow this blog post got lost – I actually wrote this in May 2010. Sorry! I’ll post soon with a new update) If you remember last year, I had some big plans for this area of the garden. Well, they’re starting to come into place.
About a month ago I planted 2 more apple trees, so now I have 2 Brambly, 1 cox and 1 Granny Smith. All are looking healthy and well and I’m looking forward to getting some apples this year!
Last week, for my birthday, we took a trip to the Rocky Mountain Garden Centre near Shepton Mallet. I really recommend this place for good value trees. (Those 2 apple trees were only £12 each and are about 6 foot tall. (The other 2 I got through Freecycle last year)). I chose 6 Himalayan Silver Birch trees – the variety with the really white trunks, and they were £18 each and about 8-9 foot tall. We paid £7.50 to have them delivered.
We also bought some pond liner for 2 symmetrical square ponds, and I spent the rest of my birthday digging! Two days later and the ponds were dug and the trees were planted. Although I half filled them with water from the water butt, it’s just typical that we haven’t had any rain for ages. I’ve been buying bags of bark every time I go to the garden centre, and the area is gradually looking more like a woodland garden rather than a wild garden.
I’m really pleased with the way it looks now. All I need is some rain; some frogs and some water plants. Oh and some seating so I can relax and enjoy it.
