I still haven’t worked out what to do when I grow up! I’m mainly a writer, an artist, and a fairytale dressmaker with various crafty hobbies! Here (and on YouTube) I share bits of my life, thoughts, and what I’m learning along the way. Let’s find magic and inspiration; join me for this creative living adventure!

Silence is more beautiful than any song

Magnolia flower bud for silence poem

After the entire restaurant hears a plate crash in the kitchen.

When the final and most devastating insult is slung in an argument.

When there’s an unexpected pause in traffic during rush hour.

When you remember…..

When the buzzard spies a mouse.

When the joke falls flat.

When you’re unexpectedly kissed on the lips.

When the wind dies down.

When you close the door.

When the sun turns red.

When your youngest starts school.

When you turn off the hairdryer.

When the sparkler goes out.

When you reach the end of a book.

When the early spring blossom opens.

When the remote is lost.

When you shed sentimental tears.

When you’ve done everything.

When you hold hands for the first time.

When the purring cat falls asleep.

When the dreaming dog wakes up.

When you turn a corner.

When you’re waiting for the result.

When the grass is cut and the mower stops.

When you hold a hug.

When you flick the switch.

When you’ve screwed up the wrapper of the last quality street.

When you just don’t know what to say.

Addendum: This is the result of one of the writing exercises we recently did at Writers’ Group. We were each given a page from an old tear-out page per day calendar that had a quote or saying at the top of each date. We could pick one of the sayings on them to inspire whatever we wrote that week. I picked one with the title of this blog post, and this is what I came up with in half an hour. If you run a writers’ group or are just looking for inspiration if writers’ block has hit, then this is a good idea to get those creative juices flowing, as they say!

This is just the thing:

If you’re a writer, how do you get over those writer’s blocks moments? Or are you never stuck for an idea?

Have you heard of the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon? Or perhaps you’ve heard it called ‘Frequency bias’? Have you ever looked around for your new car; chosen a make and model you’re interested in, and then all of a sudden you see it everywhere? It’s the car in front of you in the traffic jam, and then you walk past two more as you walk across the car park to the Tescos entrance. It seems like the universe knows you want that car, and decides to show it to you ALL the time…

A slow January
January 31, 2022
I just made it to the New Year, and then I got very ill indeed. It was nothing more serious than a fluey cold, but oh my god, I don’t remember the last time I felt that ill! I had hot flushes and chills (they were multiplying) and couldn’t breath lying down, so three nights of trying to sleep upright in the settee downstairs left me extra tired too. Anyway, the upshot is, even if I’d wanted to run into 2022 full steam ahead, I simply couldn’t. I was kind-of forced into a slow January…
